So You Want To Be A College Basketball Coach
In thousands of young men and women in America, a burning desire to coach at the collegiate level exists. Some have played at the college level while others only dreamed of it. Our TV culture has made the college coach out to be a rock star and many young people desire to perform on that stage. Here is a three-step approach for stepping on to the path to college coaching.
The first consideration is deciding if this career path is truly one your are committed to. Many coaches “think” they would like to give college coaching a shot. Ultimately, the task is too daunting and they take another career path. Careful research and analysis is needed to determine your path. The best way to accomplish this is to talk to coaches in college coaching and ask for advice.
Once the decision has been made, setting goals and committing to them is necessary. Goals should be set in terms of one year, three years and five years. Set your goal realistically, yet make them worthy of your best, most determined efforts. Realize that you may need to revise your goals as time goes.
Making a plan to accomplish your ultimate task is the last and most important step. Devise a detailed, step by step strategy that is measurable and time sensitive. Each step must be reasonable for you to attain as each step will take you closer to the next step. Do not get discouraged along the path. There is not a college or NBA coach that didn’t encounter many bumps and obstacles in their coaching journey.
There are many other parts of the journey that you will encounter later. Some of these include your experience, networking, marketing yourself, and determining the right level for you. All of these areas are part of my popular “Path to College Coaching” program. In helping more than 80 young coaches into college positions, I have developed a system that will give you the best chance to realize your dreams. Will you be the next coach to work with me on your way to the college sidelines?
