Self Defense - Listen To That Warning Voice
You spend your days as always: going to school, shopping, walking home late night from a friend’s or neighbor’s, returning home from work. Nothing out of the routine, right? But one particular day, a voice in your head (otherwise your instinct) tells you something is amiss. You feel a sense of being watched too intently, being followed too closely, even someone driving too close to the sidewalk, and you notice this is recurring with each turn you make down the blocks.
Instead of thinking it’s all in your head, sometimes such premonition will lead you to physical safety. Do you know of a heavily traveled area nearby you can retreat to? A well-lit intersection? Here is where flee or fight comes into play.
Surely we have been repeatedly told of ways to keep out of dangerous predicaments:
- Know the areas you visit, are they are well-lit and well-traveled? Are you aware of any hiding places robbers or rapists can hide, patiently awaiting the perfect moment to strike?
- You know to avoid shortcuts through back-wooded areas, dark alleyways, etc.
- As safety is found in numbers, when you go out late, have others you know with you.
- Going about your way, have your posture dictate confidence. Display this on your face. An attacker will look for vulnerability. Be alert to all sights and sounds around you. (Maybe put away the ipod.)
- Scream – if you have to, if you truly feel threatened – scream.
- Carry a cell phone. You can call the police before an attack happens.
- Take a self defense class. Prepare to fight off an attacker. Know what you should and shouldn’t do in this instance, and how to decrease the chance that the situation becomes even more violent. Remember that your attacker’s adrenaline with be pumped up, and he will be ready to expect certain things from you, such as poking his eyes, kicking his groin, etc. Good self defense teaches you to surprise this attacker, catch him off guard, and escape when possible.
Classes in self defense, whether karate, kung fu, kickboxing, not only gets you in great physical form, not only grants self confidence in yourself which you will display every day, but prepares you for any unavoidable inevitability.
Listen to that warning voice in your head first. Make sure you’re ready to act next. www.americanacademyofselfdefense.com
