How Useful Is An Action Plan To Defeat Procrastination?
Now are you currently fighting a losing battle against procrastination?
If so, have you any ideas why are you not in the winning streak?
If you notice, many people are actually moving through life without any plans. They have no plans on how to achieve their success and not to even mention how they are going to defeat procrastination.
“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” This phrase has been recited for ages now. However, how many people are really heeding this advice? Are you?
Thus, if you really truly have the desire and heart to defeat procrastination, determination, desire and commitment is a must. And on top of that, an action plan on how to do that is also necessary.
Of course, no amount of planning is going to help if you are not going to take the necessary actions to follow through. However, before you can possibly take any actions, you must first have the commitment and desires.
Therefore, before you move on any further, ask yourself this question, “Am I really committed and have the desire to defeat procrastination?”
Now if you have answered a “No” to the above question, then please do not continue. Trust me; this article will do you no help.
Still here? Great! First of all, let me congratulate you for having the heart felt desire to defeat procrastination.
So now, your next course of action will be to get honest with yourself. Take a good look through your tasks. Which are the ones you have being delaying? Are there any uncompleted tasks? Which are tasks you should be working on but haven’t got started yet?
So do you have the list ready?
Great! Now look through the list and categorize your projects accordingly.
Do you label your project as TYPE
- I can do it and I want to.
- I can do it but I don’t want to.
- I want to do it but I can’t.
- I can’t do it and I don’t want to do it.
And to get you started, aim to first finish those projects which you have labeled as TYPE 1.
If there were no such projects available, go for TYPE 2 and so on.
The point here is to get started no matter what. To stay put is to give the procrastination monster more strength while draining yours.
Get moving, get active and get going.
Now, so what happened to those tasks that are categorized as TYPE 3 or TYPE 4?
Well, then you will have to start asking yourself what are the reasons why you can’t complete the project?
Is it because of the time constraint? Or do you simply lack the necessary preparations, skills or knowledge to complete the tasks?
Now as you list down your reasons, take note of them. Are they really valid reasons or are they just excuses which you have been feeding to the procrastination monster all these while?
Therefore, my advice to you is to get someone whom you trust and tell him or her why you think you can’t finish the project. Have them decide for you if the reasons you gave are true, valid reasons or just mere excuses.
Now, even if they are valid reasons, don’t just stop there. Remember, keep going!
“If you have to swallow a frog, don’t stare at it too long.”
~~ Mark Twain ~~
Seek help from people who have completed the tasks before. If it is knowledge or planning that you need, go read some relevant books or get some help from other people.
Don’t stop dead in your tracks. Keep going.
In addition, you may want to model those successful people whom you know are successful in their daily battles against procrastination.
Ask them questions like
- How do you go about tackling those unappealing projects?
- How are you able to stay focus in your projects?
- What are mindsets or beliefs do you hold?
- When you don’t feel like completing a project, what will you do?
- What are your action plans against procrastination?
Model them and learn from them. Failures are indeed good teachers. However you need not always learn from your own failures.
Have mentors around you. Have them coached you and advised you on how to defeat procrastinations. Learn from their mistakes and failures. It is faster that way.
“If we did all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.”
~~ Thomas Edison ~~
The golden rule of your action plan in defeating procrastination: Just do something! Like I always like to say, the wrong actions are better than no actions.
