High Protein Vegetarian Lifestyle?

Forty years ago, when I was a kid (and a vegetarian newbie), vegetarianism was not common. The statement “I am a vegetarian” was met with a simple “Oh”. Then came the 1980s when it became fashionable to be vegetarian for health reasons. With this fashion came confusion…

If you are a long term vegetarian like me, you will no doubt have been asked “do you eat chicken and fish?” Answer: polite yet emphatic “No, I am a vegetarian”. This question is usually followed by “how do you get enough protein?” Answer: polite yet emphatic “Easy!”

Important Anti-cancer Foods

Many doctors and scientists believe that many cancers could be prevented with a good diet. Here are a few foods that have been shown to decrease the incidence of cancer.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are loaded with vitamin C. They also contain lycopene, which may explain a recent popular Italian study finding that people who ate raw tomatoes at least seven times per week halved their risk of several cancers as compared to those who ate tomatoes no more than once a week. Tomatoes are also rich in coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid, which hook onto nitric oxides in the foods we eat and spirit them out of the body before they can form cancer-causing chemicals called notrosamines. Tomatoes and broccoli together have been shown to decrease the growth of tumors in prostate cancer.

Lentil Soups: Easy, Filling And Delicious

Have you made a pot of lentil soup lately? It’s healthful cooking at its best: easy, hearty, tasty and loved by young and old. Lentils come in one-pound bags in the dry beans section of your supermarket. Usually you will find two kinds: ordinary greenish-brown lentils, and orange lentils which are actually just the ordinary lentils with their skins removed. You may also find tiny dark green lentils, called French lentils, but these are usually more expensive and may be in the gourmet or international section of the store. All cook quickly and make wonderful soups.

By Harriet Hodgson

Consumers used to plan their meals around meat. No more. Health-conscious consumers are putting produce first and rounding out meals with whole grains, low-fat dairy, and protein. These tips will help you plan heart healthy meals.

1. Push produce. The US Government recommends at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Fruits and vegetables contain fiber, water, and fill you up. “Fiber and water add volume without adding calories,” according to “Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight.”
